Remembrance Sunday

This week we have been learning about Remembrance Day and why we wear poppies and have a two minutes silence. Year 5 then wrote acrostic poems about Remembrance Day. This is Holly Mae’s which was one of my favourites.

REMEMBRANCE

Red poppies lay across the field, row after row
Each and every soldier fought for us
Millions of graves everywhere
Every poppy reminds us of the soldiers
Many people have lost someone in their family
Brave men from every country
Remember the soldiers that risked their lives
All of them risk their lives for us
Never forget those who are lost
Countries invaded, battles fought
Ending in silence for those who are gone.

I thought that it was hard but fun it was sad to remember. And we all worked hard to think what to write.

    Hi Holly Mae,
Your acrostic poem is amazing!! Allot of thought was definitely put into writing that. But I am not very sure that I know what an Acrostic Poem is in full detail, can you explain it to me.
    Yours Sincerely

Hi Lucy it’s Holly Mae an acrostic poem is where you write down a word like Remembrance vertically and think of interesting sentences to go with that word .But at the start of the sentence the first word has to begin with the same letter at the start like R eg Rember the solders who fort for us.
Hope to here from you more Holly Mae

    Hi I’m Lachie from NGPS,
our school didn’t have a minutes silence but our class did read a book called ‘The Quest for Courage’ and then watched a video about a man called ‘Nick Vujicic’ who was born with out any arms or legs. We read this book and watched this video because we had to type up a small document about courage and what we thought it was.

    Dear Holly Mae,
I thought that that was a very moving and touching poem. It made me think about everyone who served our country in the war (Australia).
Do you hear about the government putting the names of the soldiers who died in Afghanistan on the list of soldiers? If yes, do you think it was a good idea?
We have been focusing on the “courage” part of Remembrance Day. We watched the video “Are You Strong?” Have you ever seen that movie?

    Hi
    My name is Ashleigh
I think that was really creative. For Remembrance Day we read a book called Quest for Courage. This book is about a boy called Sam who has moved to a new school and starts to get bullied. At lunch he goes to his secret hiding place where he plays with his plastic soldiers, tank and ship. When a new girl called Jess comes to school everything changes. She stands up for the boy when bullies start teasing him. After that Jess teaches Sam what courage is. Jess describes courage as a Poppy for a heart.
